Window tint reduces heat primarily through infrared (IR) rejection and solar energy reflection. The sun’s heat is largely carried through infrared radiation, and higher-quality films—especially ceramic and nano-ceramic options—are engineered to block a significant percentage of IR rays before they enter your vehicle. Dyed films mainly reduce glare and darken the glass, but they don’t provide the same level of heat rejection as carbon or ceramic films.
Not all tint is created equal. Entry-level films may look dark but offer minimal heat performance, while premium ceramic films can reject up to 80–95% of infrared heat without needing to be extremely dark. That means you can stay cooler while remaining compliant with state tint laws.
Older metallic window films were known to sometimes interfere with radio signals, GPS, Bluetooth, and cell reception because they contained metal particles that disrupted signal transmission. However, modern high-performance films—especially ceramic and carbon-based options—are completely metal-free.
If you’re driving a newer vehicle with advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), satellite radio, built-in navigation, or keyless entry, choosing a non-metallic film is critical. Professional installers will recommend signal-safe films to ensure full functionality of your electronics while still delivering heat rejection and UV protection.
The longevity of window tint depends on three main factors: film quality, installation quality, and environmental exposure. Premium films often come with lifetime warranties against bubbling, peeling, fading, or color change. Cheaper films are more likely to fade purple, crack, or delaminate over time.
To extend the life of your tint:
Avoid rolling windows down for at least 3–5 days after installation.
Use ammonia-free glass cleaners.
Park in shaded areas when possible.
Choose a reputable installer who heat-shrinks and seals film properly.
With proper care and professional installation, high-quality tint can easily last 10+ years.
Tint percentage refers to Visible Light Transmission (VLT)—the amount of light allowed to pass through the glass. For example, 35% VLT allows 35% of visible light in and blocks 65%. Every state has specific regulations regarding how dark you can go on the front windows, rear windows, and windshield.
